The Wichita Falls Alliance for Arts and Culture presents the talented vocal ensemble New Arts Six in celebration of Women’s History Month. The performance will be Friday, March 8, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Wichita Falls located at 3601 Taft Boulevard. “A Joyful Noise,” features a series of songs and verse that pays tribute to all women, their struggles, their strength, and their joy.
Established in 1981, New Arts Six has performed and conducted workshops in concert halls, churches and universities across the country. Cynthia Navarrete, spokesperson for the company, says they have one mission, “to preserve, promote and present the African American Spiritual.”
Margie Reese, Executive Director of the Wichita Falls Alliance for Arts and Culture, says, “These elegant women are just mesmerizing. Their work to preserve the folk music of the African American spiritual is incredibly important and worth taking time out to enjoy. Their rich melodic voices will bring back memories of church days with mothers and grandmothers.”
All six women are classically-trained vocalists, pianists, and actors. Their approach to these American folk arts songs reflects their musical versatility, surprising their audiences with slight classic jazz overtones. The group’s theatrically-presented works encompass poetry, dialogue, and audience interactions, with an emphasis on original arrangements of the music.
Women’s History Month has been celebrated during the month of March since 1988. It is a time to honor the many achievements of women throughout history and salutes the ongoing work by today’s women who work tirelessly to make our communities stronger
Reese says, “It’s our pleasure to honor women and girls in our community by bringing you this gifted ensemble to Wichita Falls. We are grateful for the leadership at First Presbyterian Church for their continued willingness to bring the arts and audiences together. Celebrate the women in your life by giving them a gift of timeless music. Invite your best friend, your daughters, or any woman who deserves an uplifting evening of song. She’ll thank you for it.”
