This exhibition pays tribute to the lives and legacies of African American pioneers, both past and present, who have shaped the history and culture of Wichita County. Building on the legacy of Charlye Farris, the first Black female attorney in Texas, we celebrate legends who have broken barriers, uplifted their communities, and made lasting contributions to our region. We honor these individuals, whose courage, resilience, and achievements continue to inspire and influence our community.

The Life and Legacy of Charlye Ola Farris

Among her many trailblazing accomplishments, Charlye Ola Farris was the first African American woman licensed to practice law in the Lone Star State, the first woman to actively practice law in Wichita County, and the first African American to serve as a judge in the South since Reconstruction.

The exhibition, made possible by the Texas Bar Foundation, explores a timeline of her life in context with the Civil Rights Movement and Wichita County History.
