Guidelines and application materials for Grants for Arts Projects (GAP) and Challenge America funding are now available on the National Endowment for the Arts’ website at arts.gov/grants. The National Endowment for the Arts supports projects in any part of the nation’s 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. jurisdictions. Through our programs, we encourage activities that rebuild the creative economy and educate the next generation; unite and heal the nation through the arts; and serve the nation’s arts field.
We are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and fostering mutual respect for the diverse beliefs and values of all individuals and groups. Eligible organizations that received American Rescue Plan (ARP) or CARES funding are also eligible to apply to GAP or Challenge America.
Important registration information
Before applying, your organization must create and maintain up-to-date registrations with both the System for Award Management (SAM) at SAM.govand Grants.gov. Registering and maintaining accounts with SAM and Grants.gov is always FREE. These registrations can take several weeks to finalize, so begin this process early! Your organization will use the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) available in your SAM.gov record to apply for a grant. Challenge America offers support primarily to small organizations for projects in all artistic disciplines that extend the reach of the arts to populations that are underserved. See Applicant Eligibility for what is required to apply.
Application Deadline: April 21, 2022 for projects taking place beginning in 2023.
New this year: Challenge America will accept projects with an arts education, pre-K to 12th grade, standards-based focus. Challenge American is an entry point for organizations seeking Arts Endowment funding. The category features an abbreviated application, a robust structure of technical assistance, and grants for a set amount of $10,000. Grants require a cost share/match of $10,000 consisting of cash and/or in-kind contributions. Total project costs must be at least $20,000 or greater.

Grants for Arts Projects
Grants for Arts Projects is our principal grants program for organizations based in the United States. Application Deadlines: February 10 and July 7, 2022 for projects taking place beginning in 2023. Through project-based funding, the program supports public engagement with, and access to, various forms of art across the nation, the creation of art, learning in the arts at all stages of life, and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life. We encourage projects that address any of the following:
- Elevate artists as integral and essential to a healthy and vibrant society
- Celebrate the nation’s creativity and/or cultural heritage
- Enrich our humanity by broadening our understanding of ourselves as individuals and as a society
- Originate from or are in collaboration with the following constituencies encouraged by White House executive orders:
- Historically Black Colleges and Universities
- Tribal Colleges and Universities
- American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes
- African American Serving Institutions
- Hispanic Serving Institutions
- Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities
- Organizations that support the independence and lifelong inclusion of people with disabilities.
In recognition of the United States of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, we also welcome arts projects that educate and engage communities in dialogue about the past, present, and future of our nation. Cost share/matching grants range from $10,000 to $100,000. Designated local arts agencies that are eligible to subgrant may request from $10,000 to $150,000 for subgranting projects. A minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount is required.
