The Wichita Falls Fire Department has made great strides in the development of safety. In the 1800s, all firefighters had for protection was a helmet, a flannel shirt, and rubber boots. Today, a firefighter wears a Normex Bunker Coat and pants, gloves, hood, and reinforced helmet. A major improvement is the self-contained breathing apparatus that is worn on the back of the firefighter.
