Kim Ward, Artist Statement:
I am a self taught artist. By walling myself off with my art, I survived a traumatizing childhood. I had to find somewhere in my mind for comfort. I learned to concentrate, to pay attention to details, allowing “me time” to lose myself in the study of the intricacies of shape, light and hue. This experience colors all of my life, and my art. I do not paint or create anything concerning political or religious discord. I do not paint the ugly. I paint for the sheer joy and beauty it brings me. I want my audience to experience the same.
I research each project to ensure the accuracy of my subject matter.
I paint with acrylics, oils, graphite and charcoal, some pieces contain all of these. I paint botanicals, portraits, both animal and human, and abstract impressionism. I am intensely curious, so my work is always evolving, it is clean, and quiet, yet bright and precise with sharp lines and high contrast. I love bright sunlit florals with dark Caravaggio style backgrounds and a sense of drama. I want to impart a feeling of warmth, hope and solitude.
I love using mediums to create texture and effects. I use canvas and various substrates. I paint on violins and full size fiberglass horses
.The majority of my works are 2’x4’ or 3’x5. My largest is a 77 ‘x 22’ diorama at our regional airport.
